Then I guess you must want to know more, like how Roy went from being a commercial airline pilot and me, an office manager in a data center, to starting KartHost!
How did KartHost begin?
Believe it or not, we didn’t begin with a career of hosting websites in mind! We actually started out by volunteering in the late 90s at a local kart racing club, maintaining the club’s website.
You guessed it! It didn’t take long for word to travel among the karting community, and before we knew it, we were volunteering at other kart clubs and tracks updating websites, and maintaining their web hosting too!
At that time, their web hosting was scattered across various companies throughout the country, making maintenance over-complicated and inefficient. In early 2000, we found a solution through an acquaintance from EV1 (Everyone’s Internet). It enabled us to lease a single Cobalt server that could house all of their websites efficiently and in one place.
When we presented our consolidated solution to the kart clubs and tracks, we asked if they would allow us to move their sites and pay us what they were paying their hosts. They said YES!
This offer allowed us to lease the website server and still have enough money left over so we could start our own debt-free business! I can’t describe the elation we felt knowing that someone was going to pay us to do something we really enjoyed doing and we’re passionate about.
In homage to our roots in the karting community, we wanted our name to reflect this legacy. It also needed to say something about what we were doing. And thus The Kart Company was born, June 2000. Keeping up with the smaller domain names, in 2004 we rebranded ourselves to KartHost.com.
Fast forward to today, a lot has changed in web hosting and the industry has made huge leaps forward since the early 2000s.
We can now offer WordPress hosting on state-of-the-art scalable cloud servers, Nginx, PHP-FM, SSD drives, CDNs, Anti-Spam, WordPress, blogging functionality, and so much more!
